2018 Winner

Daniel Scala – Conestoga Valley HS

I will be forever grateful that I started playing tennis heading into high school. For most of my life, I had played soccer and it was the only sport that I played competitively. Not once had I turned my attention to any other sport. That changed when tennis came into my life. Both of my sisters play tennis, and they managed to convince me to try tennis. To my surprise, I really enjoyed the sport. Furthermore, a desire to get better started to generate inside of me. A year later, I am a member of the Conestoga Valley Boys Tennis Team. Being on the tennis team has greatly improved my high school experience. I am lucky to be with a group of great guys on the tennis team. Especially during this 2018 season. I believe that we are more closely knit than we have ever been before. We are close on and off the tennis courts. The guys on the team always have my back and always root me on in tough matches. Their friendship and support has made my overall high school experience one to remember and cherish.

Being on the tennis team has taught me many values concerning life. In particular, being on the tennis team has taught me patience and leadership. Patience is a major part of the sport. It can be the difference between winning and losing a match. During a match, to win a point requires probing shots until a player can go for a winner. Patience can be easily applied to my life outside of the tennis court. It can be used for the remainder of my education, and it can be used once I am out in the workplace and facing challenging issues and problems. Also, the tennis team has taught me leadership. This year on the tennis team, I have been voted by my teammates to be a captain of the team. I have had to be a leader and role model for the team. I have learned that as a leader, I must set the needs of the team before my own. Those very principles I will use when I attend the University of Scranton as an NCAA Student-Athlete this fall.
